Wheal Vor in the News

Wheal Vor Area from Treggoning Hill

Wheal Vor was in the news recently featuring in the recent Sunday Times (article may be behind a paywall) and Channel 4 Dispatches joint investigation into the Duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster.

Members of the group were interviewed by journalists from both teams.

Whilst we as a group have no position on the monarchy, we note the programme's focus on some of the less transparent activities of the Duchies with concern, given the stated environmental commitments of both King Charles and Prince William and that the historical experience of mining is that mining always has negative impacts on the environment. The simple history is of toxic pollution caused by mining all over the world, and also in our county.

See our media statement regarding recent news coverage and television reports (Channel 4 Dispatches and Sunday Times)

Cornish Metals

In other news Cornish Metals have today announced an optimistic new growth opportunity for the future of their mining operation within their historic Camborne sites. This they are calling the “near mine exploration target”.

If this development reached the extraction stage it will be a considerable boost to production volumes but more importantly extend the life of the mine substantially. In our view another good reason to stop the creation of new mines in the rural areas of Breage surrounded by areas of natural beauty.

Some good environment news! (or is it?)

October's newsletter mentioned that the UK’s last coal fired power station, the 2000 megawatt plant at Ratcliffe on Soar in Nottinghamshire had finally closed down. This plant had been operational since 1968 and was the last power station of this size to close bringing the coal burning era for generating electricity in the UK to a close.

However, the UK’s biggest ever coal fired power station, Drax near Selby in North Yorkshire is still operational. Drax had an installed capacity of 3960 megawatts consisting of six turbo generators each of 660 megawatts, when operating at full capacity burning coal the hourly coal consumption would have been around 1780 Tons depending on coal quality and operational factors.

Drax finally shut down two of its coal fired units in 2021, the remaining four units were converted to burn biomass, this work being completed by 2018, the power station's declared biomass generating capacity is 2600 megawatts (2.6 GW) .The biomass Drax now burns takes the form of wood pellets that are mostly manufactured in, and sourced from trees in North America.

Drax is currently the UK’s largest single source of CO2 emissions.

Carleen Village is preparing for Christmas!

The Village Hall has invested in new Christmas lights. Members of the committee have festooned the tree outside the Village Hall with lights and decorations.

The Village Hall committee hope people in Carleen and surrounding area will help make the village Christmassy with their own outside lights and decorations.

Inside the hall will be decorated in early December when the tree is put up.

If you haven’t done so already why don’t you take part in the Christmas raffle (there is a card to pick numbers on the table inside the hall). The draw with results to be announced at the Christmas coffee morning on 14th December.

Did You Know?

In a recent BBC article Reuse shops have opened at some of Cornwall's recycling centres in Truro and St Austell, with another one due to open soon at United Downs. Operated by Suez Recycling and Recovery UK they aim to help reduce waste that could be repaired and have another life with a new owner.

Nimby's Corner is on a break this month but will return soon!
