Cornish Tin Activity

It has been confirmed that Cornish Tin have concluded their Phase 2 exploration drilling campaign and have claimed significant Tin and Lithium discoveries in a news update on their website. Obviously we cannot confirm the results of their assays and they have an incentive to be positive about what they have found in order to encourage further investment...

Did You Know?

There are currently no tin ore refining facilities in the whole of Europe. Any tin ore mined here would have to be exported to Southeast Asia or the US to be processed, entailing huge greenhouse gas emissions for transport. After processing the tin would most likely be sold on the global market rather than used for UK industry - so much for domestically mined tin for the UK!

Nimby's Corner

When you think of the phrase “not in my backyard” it conjures up the image of the selfish few denying the needs of the many.

We all agree that there is a good argument for that. Except we believe our “backyard” to be the duchy of Cornwall which should be a place of holidays and leisure, a breadbasket for a small crowded nation and, yes, a place for 21st century low impact industry. A view that does not include new mines in the parish of Breage.

We accept the need for transitional minerals to help us mitigate the effects of Climate Change but as we all know, mining is highly polluting and will always be so.

So we say that we need to see proof from politicians and the wealthy mining lobby that in the fast moving transformative world in which we live, mineral extraction is vital, quantifiable, economically sustainable, environmentally low impact as possible and most importantly community supported.

Geological Society Surveys we have seen from the UK, EU and the USA are simply not good enough to make these earth changing decisions since they all underestimate the speed of technological changes and the impact of the circular economy.

Over the next months in this column we will examine the areas that impact upon mining in Breage; be that water, noise, air quality, mine viability etc. We see mining impact as a background to the issue of community consent to these future speculative projects.

If you want to tell us about your upcoming event, or if you are considering becoming a member and actively supporting our campaign to stop mining and the destruction of our local environment, or have any queries please head over to our contact page.
